Any time you have unprotected sex you could get pregnant. Many women don't have a period during breastfeeding, but it can start back up at any time. And since you ovulate before you start your period, it is possible to get pregnant again even though you have not had your period.

Because you may have ovulated and not have known it - you don't get a period until AFTER you already ovulated. So in the first month after having your baby and breastfeeding that you ovulated, had sex, got pregnant and didn't get a period that month. And right there is why breastfeeding cannot be relied on as birth method of birth control.
