I've had my IUD since April 209 and the last few weeks I've felt very pregnant, tired constantly, siatic nerve pain which I got really early with my daughter, hungry all the time, my boobs have seemed to get quite bigger and the scariest one movement!! At first I thought it was gas so I cut down on the gassy food and it still continued every night and in the morning somewhat threw out the day and I remember when I was pregnant the first time her moving to one side of my stomach and feeling that pressure I get that too I've even gained a bit of weight.... What are the chances of getting pregnant with an IUD I check my strings the other day and they are in place but my cervix feels very closed and not what it used to feel like when I checked them before...I'm freaking out my daughter is only 10 months and we aren't really in the position to have another baby!!

I have the IUD since October 2008, It is thought it was great until I read your story. Are you pregnant? I was wondering cause my spouse and I want to wait until next year to try again and if I need to take more precautions then I would like to know.

Mirena contains a hormone called levonorgestrel. anytime you introduce hormones you can have side effects that mimic pregnancy...or many other side effects. they do make nonhormonal IUDs. The copper IUD is the most effective nonhormonal form of birthcontrol next to sterilization. my advice...see a Dr. more than likely your not pregnant, but you need to know for sure...and if your having side effects, you need to find an alternative. hope this helps :)

I'm glad you went ahead and took the test! I had the mirena in for just over a year and took a test once or twice myself. Every couple of months I would get that same feeling! Finally, I just assumed that it was my body going through the menstrual cycle without the bleeding...

Its not 1 in 10,000 that get pregnant with a merina in its 1 in 1000. Many women believe it is a higher chance than that based on the stories countless women have shared in getting pregnant with one in. Maybe stats haven't been accurately taken.. ?

I agree with the rest take a pregnancy test. I know of two people who are pregnant as we speak with the IUD in. I wish you all the luck.

I was the one in a few people who are allergic to the Mirena, felt horrible, go get checked out, good thing is you might not be pregnant at all, it just might be your hormones:)

You might want to get a pregnancy test just to be sure, but I can't imagine that being the case. I have the Mirena inserted as well, and it has caused significant weight gain, that bloated feeling, and sporadic bleeding.

Yes my I know someone who had to have emergency surgery to remove her baby due to a tubal pregnancy because of the mirena. Not to be taken lightly, take a test right away!!

Tha chances of getting pregnant on Mirena are slim to none. But if you are feeling all of those side effects, then you should definitely get a test or go to the doctor & get a test. They don't officially know what can happen if you do get pregnant while you have an IUD but there is a chance of miscarriage or birth defects.

I have the IUD and the doctor said that there's a 1% chance. You should take a pregnancy test to be sure. I know of someone that has gotten pregnant with her IUD and she ended up having a miscarrage.

Quoting Jamie:

I think the chances are 1 in every 10,000 women can get pregnant with the Mirena IUD. But you really shouldn't hold off on getting a pregnancy test. If your pregnant you need to get the IUD taken out right away! If you don't, it can cause you to have blood clots and even cause damage to your baby. I know this because I thought I was pregnant at one point with it in and thats what my doctor told me. I even thought I could feel a baby moving inside me, turns out it was just my insides getting back in place. But still you should get a test, a couple even, just to be sure.

The chances are limited, however, there was such a case at our local DHS office.  The lady couldn't have it removed, because it would cause her to go into labor, because they have to open the cervix to get it out.  If you do become pregnant, you will have to be closely monitored by your OB, and there are risks.  The lady who was pregnant with an IUD in place lost her baby at around 7 months, I believe.  You should really get it checked out asap!  I had the Mirena for a little over a year, and had pain, moodswings, weight gain, balding, low libido, pain during and after intercourse, and itching.  I treated myself for yeast infections, but it didn't resolve.  At my annual checkup, I had it removed...the Nurse Practicioner said my cervix was raw, like I was having an allergic reaction to it!  Definetly keep checking with your doc if you are experiencing troubles!  Good Luck!

I so feel for you. I was going to post a similar question. I had a tubal ligation!!! I fear I may be but I'm too terrified to take a test. But please take one because that IUD can cause you more problems than you want!! Many many blessings!!!

Best thing to do is talk to your doctor. If your not pregnant it could be some complication with your IUD.

My sister-in-law was pregnant when hers was put in (a pregnancy test wasn't done prior and she used breastfeeding as birth control). I know they say to put it in while you are on your period, but I bled during my first trimester so bleeding could be mistaken for a period!

Anyways, she cannot take the implant out due to where it is by the baby. She is now the guinea pig out here since we haven't found anyone who has gone an entire pregnancy with one in... She is now about 22 weeks along but at any time she could lose the baby, or just go into premature labor. It is pretty scary.

Please take a test! If you are pregnant, you need to have that thing taken out!

Good luck to you!

my dr told me that there is only a 1% chance. I just had my son 7 weeks (tomorrow) ago and I wanted to get the IUD. I did ask my dr about all the side effect and the chance of getting pregnant. I couldnt get it becuase my insurance doesnt pay for any birth control method. but my dr also told me that if you get pregnant on an IUD you have a very high chance of a miscarriages. So my advice to you is, you need to go to the dr and find out if you are pregnant. and if you are find out if they cant take your IUD out. so you wont lose your baby. I know it will be hard to have another but it will be harder on you if you lose it. phyisaly and emotionally. ( if you are pregnant.)

All anyone can really tell you is if you think your pregnant.. go get a test and call your doctor or go to the health department. Because if you are the IUD can couse you to have a misscarrige.

Take a pregnancy test that will tell you if not go doctors and have blood test done as some times and only in slight cases pregnancy tests dont tell and blood tests needed. As for you having a 10 month old and you not being ready id think long and hard before you choose your next step as it will remain with you for the rest of your life. Ive heard of some drugs and other things can cause phantom pregnancies and certain ones show sighns of pregnancy due to hormones used in the drug but im not to clear on that so seek medical advice. To me it does sound like you pregnant so best thing is to seek advice from you doctor. I hope it all works out for you and just for a little reasurence on close children i have three under 4 cj is 4, dylan 16 months, kyle 17 weeks. Not always easy but id never change a thing. Good luck x
