Hi. I am 38 weeks pregnant, expecting my first child. Right now I am very confused as to where I want to give birth. I have heard good stories and bad stories about both private and public hospitals. I fear spending R16 000+ at a private hospital when I could get the same service at a public hospital for free. Please please please advise!

You'd better hurry and decide now that you are essentially ready to deliver.

In the US, the difference is private hospitals pay taxes and public do not. All hospitals are in the business of making money or they'd not stay open. What it is like in other countries is far more complex.

I can tell you from watching the experience of my niece she chose the more expensive private hospital and ended up there for 5.5 weeks before her son's birth for health issues and complications of being pregnant and then add to that the birth of her son. Her bills came to about $100,000 dollars because of it. She would have had less cost in a public hospital. And she was on state Medicaid too.
