Do you know the social security numbers for all your family?

Is it important to memorize them?

I know my husbands and my sons but I keep forgetting my daughters!

I no longer have a spouse, but when I was married I did know his ss#. I keep my children;'s numbers in a secure place in case they are ever needed.

Not by heart but I know where they are kept if I ever need them. I have my own memorized I've never found the need to have my sons and husbands memorized however. I don't use them that often and like I said if I need them I know where they are.

Thanks joy! That's so cool! So the first three digits are more of an area grouping, so that makes sense as my husband and daughter have the same number and were both born in the same city and county. My son was in a different city, as was I. Sweet!

Does anyone know how the numbers are assigned?

My hubby's starts 397, mine starts 387 and I'm younger so I figured it went in an order? But then Eric is 393 so that makes little sense and then to top it off fiernas starts 397 just like Matt so now I wonder if there's an order a all?

Do they all start with 3????

I know mine, hubby's, both the kids, my ex's, my dad and my stepmoms. I just have a thing for numbers also and they never ever seem to leave my head. Like I know my ex's younger 2 brothers numbers because they are one off from him.

Here you don't have to give your SS# in the ER. You just give your medical insurance card.

Oh I know Joy but I have always carried them with me at all times. I have needed them at the most oddest times and it is so much easier just having them with me. Guess I will learn the hard way if anything ever happens. Knock on wood I have been fortunate for the first 40yrs.

I don't think you "need" to memorize them but it sure comes in handy at the ER haha.

I think it's probably good to at least attempt to memorize your kids numbers,

For some reason, I can remember mine and my husband's no problem but I cannot for the life of me remember my son's!!!

Also, you are NOT supposed to carry your social security card around on you. Identity theft. Someone could find your card and ruin your credit (among other aspects of your life). Our SS cards and birth certificates are locked away in the safe and only come out when I need to give someone a copy or provide the number to someone. It's the same with the title to your car. It should NEVER be stored in your glove box.

Nope sure don't. I can remember my husband's half the time but need to look up the numbers for my two sons. I don't think we need to memorize them, just our own.

Ok, I have been working on my daughters since posting this and I think I've got it down. Hah. I don't remember anyone's cell phone numbers cuz its stored in my phone so I figure ihave extra storage to memorize a few numbers. I know when Eric had to go to the ER once I was able to tell them his number upon request so I hope to be able to do it for all my kids

I figured it was just an American thing? Maybe other countries have a different system.

We do have a card but we are discouraged from carrying it to protect our identity. So the cards are in a safe at home.

Laura, i wouldn't worry so much about having them all memorized. Yes, its certainly easier if you don't have to refer to your wallet when doing paperwork, but no biggie. I have mine, hubby's and eldest son's memorized. Younger one's isn't as of yet, but I haven't had near the paperwork to fill out for him as I did for his brother. I'm sure i'll have it memorized soon, as the passport paperwork and camp stuff get filled out for him, though!

As long as you have them handy, and in a secure place, its ok.

I'm just like Dove...I have a thing for numbers. phone numbers, social security, account numbers, you name it, its stuck in my head.

I know them. I even remember my ex's (no, I don't use it. I just have a 'thing' with numbers). It comes in real handy to have my kids numbers memorized, so I don't have to look them up when I'm filling out certain paperwork.
