Hi ladies! I am a labor and delivery nurse as well as a mOm. Let me help answer this question. First the mucous plug cannot regenerate. It firms at the beginning of pregnancy and as the cervix starts to change shape towards the end it comes out. It can come out gradually or all at once. When it comes out all at once it can be up to two weeks before labor starts on average. When it comes out gradually as if the case with most mons it can still be up to a month before actual labor starts. In my 16 years experience the mucous plug is not a reliable indicator of labor. Everyone's body responds in different ways. If you are concerned that it has come out too early, please talk to your doctor about it. Communication with your provider is important especially in your later months. If he or she doesn't take the time you need express your dissatisfaction with them. Sometimes they are so busy they don't realize just how concerned you are and need a little wakeup call from you!!! Hope this helps!!

Thanks to the nurse. I first thought the question was a joke. Then I saw the answers about the plug growing back and found it very disturbing that these women's doctors couldn't provide them with a medically sound answer. (NO!!)

My water broke with my first, so neither did I. It can stay in place apparently. With my daughter, it started coming out a little at a time. In fact, the midwife told me I was not in labor...that it was just "show" when infact I was in full blown labor.
