My 6 year old daughter is having a field trip at the end of the week next week. I was excited until I asked her if she wanted me to attend. She was really quiet. I asked again and she said she was still thinking about it. She finally said, "well no but I don't want to hurt your feelings." I told her she wouldn't (even though she did) and I asked her "but why?" She couldn't give me a definitive answer. One was, well I'm afraid my friends will think you'll take me away from them. Another was because of my weight. She asked if my feelings were hurt and if she was in trouble. I explained to her that telling the truth will never lead to getting into trouble and she should always be honest and that I was alright. We haven't spoken about it again. This happened this past Monday, and my heart still hurts. Is this normal? Should I be worried? How do I handle this situation?

Yeah... I certainly wouldn't have him come off w/ it as a scolding approach. She's 6... and honesty is a GOOD thing. Just kind of more as a general conversation about body size, skin color, etc... and how we don't exclude people based on how they look.

Other than the fact that she mentioned your weight... I would let it go. Most of it sounds perfectly normal.

She needs to be aware that people come in all shapes and sizes though and excluding someone (anyone) from something (anything) based on their weight is NOT ok on any level and leads to bullying.

@Dove I hadn't thought about how she perceived the weight as bullying but your right! I am thinking about having dad have a talk to her about that. I'm afraid she is so worried about hurting my feelings that she won't be honest enough with me. Thank you!
