my son just turned 4, i breastfed him till he was one. ever since he always puts his hands down my shirt as a comfort deal i suppose like when hes tired or got hurt.but most of the time i tell him not to do that but other times i just let him cuz i feel bad cuz i know it comforts him, so now hes at the point where sometimes hell tell me right away when he reaches for them that hes just going to rest his hand on my chest and not my boob, he knows that thats where he got his milk from before. Now he doesnt really drink regular milk since he was about 2 but he still gets his dairy but not in milk. idk what to do when i breastfed him it was awesome and it came so natural for us . is it to bizarre to start back up now that hes four? i mean i wouldnt mind starting back up but he is about to start school. so i just am not sure what to do! please help?????

I don't know if I would start up again at four. A preschooler probably couldn't re-establish your supply.

I do know some kids who nursed beyond the age of four, but it was very occasionally. Any kids I know who got breast milk past the age of five were drinking leftover milk that had been pumped for a baby sibling.

The natural age of weaning for humans is estimated to be between 3 and 7. It's not outrageous to nurse a four year old, but again, I don't think it would be easy to start up again in your situation. Sometimes older siblings start nursing again when there is a new baby if mom is okay with that, but it's the pregnancy and the baby that establishes the supply, not the older child who nurses less frequently.

This isn't the first time I've heard of this though. Years ago I remember reading a post from a mom on another board who weaned her daughter when she was two, and her daughter was six and bitter about having been weaned.

Maybe try posting in forums or on boards specific to breastfeeding. I don't see a lot of moms nursing toddlers and preschoolers in the general forums on Circle of Moms.

At this stage, if he has not been breastfeed all the way up to age four, I am not sure restarting is a good idea. You should look for other comfort zones for him to touch besides your chest. I do not know about you but if my son touched me there at that age in public I might become a bit irked at that. And if he is going to start to school soon, he might get picked on if the other kids found out he was doing that.

If it comes natural then i would home school him so you could restart breastfeeding again and its the only healthy way to give milk so i would totally do it

Nursing a 4 year old who has been nursed continuously is fine... starting up nursing a child that hasn't nursed in 3 years... is weird. He, most likely, will not know how to latch and suck properly... If you want him to have breast milk you should pump and put it in a cup at this point.

i know i did at first and i tell him no thats not ohkay, especially in public but he just always has this natural urge especially at bedtime . but he knows that hes not suppose to do that, but like i said i let him sometimes just cuz, but at first when i would reject him he would get real upset. but i dont think it owuld to hard i mean if i squeeze my boob ill still get some out, i dont think it milk persay . but its a start.and i still take these fenugreek pills that are suppose to help in production.
