This question is pertaining to my grandson. He is in first grade, all people we have talked to indicated he would be promoted to the 2nd grade. Had a meeting today with his teacher, counsellor and the person who evaluate kids to see if he has a learning disability. He tested average or above average in all areas except math (word problem) and reading orally. His teacher did state he was behind in reading earlier this 9 week period. Which I tracked the books he read at home on his level (14) first grade 64 books extra and did improve. Teacher rated his reading 4, evaluation showed 12. It is determined no learning disability, but plays when he should be listening. Tracher stated she did not recommend him for retention as did all other parties at meeting. When we got home going through his backpack, i found a final report card paper folded among his old graded school work. Only subject he was below 75 in was math which was 68. The very bottom of page in small writting said "student retained to 1 grade". Very shocking to say the least. Can we fight this?
Apologies for any grammar errors, pecking it out on phone.
Thanks in advance

Did you call the school and inquire whether or not it was an error? It seems really odd that you'd sit thru a whole meeting, agree he'd move on to 2nd grade and then find a different remark on his report card.

So if I am understanding correctly, at the meeting the teacher said she did NOT recommend him for RETENTION but on the report card she did RETAIN him? I would definitely call the school and talk with the teacher for clarification. I personally would do that before calling the principal. Being a former elementary school teacher if his only grade below a 75 was in math that doesn't seem a reason to retain him. I would definitely call the school. Let us know what happens!

Contact the teacher and principal of the school. The teacher would have done the report so would know that they had out that on the report.

Thanks everyone, the teacher called the next morning and was very apologetic. Said it was a error on not only his but all 24 students, im sure she got a lot of angry emails and calls.
