My fiancés family is telling me that drinking beer will increase my milk supply but I don't want my child to be given alcohol. Is it safe to consume alcohol and caffeine while breastfeeding? I haven't done so because I think I know the answer to this but just wanted to know your thoughts, thanks!

I've only had one beer and that was after my pregnancy and never had a sip while pregnant. I was worried about my milk supply because one week to another i started pumping almost two ounces less. I'll have to try the non alcoholic beer then! Also I tread away from the caffeine for a bit as well. 😌

A cup of coffee if you are used to the caffeine 'should' be fine (though some babies react to even the smallest amount). 'They' say that w/ alcohol as long as you are safe to drive you are safe to drink, but personally I don't drink alcohol at all and haven't even had a sip since before getting pregnant my first time... and my girls are almost 14. ;) That's my preference though. I do know quite a few people who have had a beer or similar alcohol content while breastfeeding and zero issues w/ them or their children.

As far as increasing your supply... I 'believe' (the beer... never heard that w/ caffeine) it can help (from what I've heard), but I think I've also heard that nonalcoholic beer can have the same impact... so it's not the alcohol that does it.

I also agree w/ Sarah in asking why you think you need to increase your supply?

You would need to pump and dump. Is there a reason why you feel you need to increase your supply? If baby is having enough wet and dirty diapers and is gaining weight at the recommended level then your mill production is good and there is no reason why you should increase.
