What would cause this? Does it go away? What are the symptoms? How can I make it feel better? What not to do, to aggravate it? My dr. apt is not until the 23rd and I can not live like this. This was weird. I can move. Any suggestions. Any nurses out there? Anyone who has it? Is this what I have to look forward to? Getting old sucks. Thank you in advance. {:+)

Good Morning Shannin! :D

I didn't realize your medical issues were sciatica! I may be a little helpful here.

When you got pregnant...your center of gravity changed. This put undue weight on your back. It's your lower back, right? The baby sitting right on your pelvis pinches your sciatic nerve.

Now, after the baby is born, things "try" to slip back into their placement before the pregnancy, but we both know our bodies have changed TOO much for that. You have to do all you can to get your center of gravity BACK to where it was...and not offkilter, pressing on your sciatic nerve.

Here's what is working for me. (and it's NOT cured.)

1. Exercise. Tightening my core...my stomach muscles takes some of the pressure off of my lower back. The stronger my core is..the stronger my legs are, the more they can carry, and take the load off of my lower back.

2. There are stretches that can help. Get someone to help you. Lay flat on your back, and curl your LEFT knee over the right side of your body. When that knee gets near the floor, you will FEEL the pressure come off of your back. Switch sides...repeat frequently.

3. Lean over a counter, on both hands. Look down at your feet. Point your toes at the ceiling so your weight is rested on your heels. Now rock your weight from one foot to the other. As you sling your hip out to one side...you can feel the pressure leave.

4. I don't take prescription meds. I will take an Aleve when needed. Naproxin is an anti-inflammatory and works GREAT on my lower back. Sometimes it gets so bad you can feel a warm pocket of fluid sitting back there. Aleve helps...more than all the others combined.

5. I used to think sleeping on a heating pad helped..until my big brother the RN explained to me that heat was causing more inflammation. He has convinced me that COLD helps better. I will tuck those plastic icepacks in my underwear. I don't SEE them helping...but I also dont get 'stove-up' like I would after coming off of the heating pad. Maybe he was right...but don't tell HIM that.

6. I love liver....beef liver, chicken livers...doesn't matter. BUT...organ meat incites inflammation in the joints...we have to avoid that right now. :( Oh...egg yolks are on that list too.

Also, my doctor told me to get up and walk every hour (I was driving long distances). Also put support behind your back when sitting and maybe one foot up on a support when standing or sitting, and no heels. You are welcome.

Lower back arthritis, nerve impingment, it's very painful. I'm 51, I know. I'm a nurse and have arthritis. What I always tell my patients is that they are the only ones responsible for their back. Use good body mechanics, ice, alternate with heat, motrin, pillows under your knees when sleeping. If you have small ones, be very careful how you life and use your legs. Avoid bending forward. I'm laughing, I just took Motrin because picking up my grandson (he's 19 months) is painful sometimes. I was diagnosed 20 years ago and am really doing well. I'd stay away from narcotics or only use them on a very short term basis because the damage they cause long term is NOT worth it. I hope you feel better!!!

I am not a Health Care Professional BUT I have had this for years. AS I understand it, it is the inflammation of the sciatic nerve. Usually caused by a narrowing of the area around the nerve. One thing that bothers mine is the weather, damp rainy days are bad for mine. Also for me any tight fitting clothes around my waist or thighs. Ice packs or ice cubes in a plastic bag with a towel wrapped around it helps. SOme times moist heat also helps.

Take your time. Iam hoping I can help you figure out what might adding to the problems. I had the same problems with my meds. They had me one one or one thing. The side effect of that one was severe shaking so the put m on another to help with that side effect and that one had the side effect that I could read any thing close up. It comptely sucked.

Hey Shannin, Do you have problems losing weight. I know you are limited on how much you can do. But even if you are watching what and how much you are eating do you stay the same or gain more?

My husband has been managing sciatica since 2006. There were times when he couldn't even walk, he was just lying on the sofa, totally immobilized. He needed me to help him get to the washroom and couldn't eat sitting up. It was terrible!

At our local college there are always community courses, and he took one called "Healthy Back". It was basically a series of stretches all designed to help one know what was happening in one's back, and to take care of any stiffness way before it became debilitating. It has changed our lives!

At first, he did the stretches three times a day. About 3 years after taking the course, he doesn't do them even once a week, and he's fine! He's lost a little weight and pays more attention to posture, which helps, but the main thing is that the first time he senses any tightness, he does his stretches, takes a Robaxacet (actually the store brand with the same ingredients), sits on some ice, and takes it easy for a day or two. It helps so much, I can't even begin to describe it. I hated taking care of him. I'm a tall and sturdy girl, so I can do all the furniture moving, heavy stuff-carrying, etc., but it's embarrassing for my husband to have to limp along beside his wife who's doing all the heavy lifting. Now he's stronger than me, and occasionally even whisks me off my feet and dances me around the house! It's not as if the sciatica is gone, because he always has to be aware of it, but life has improved dramatically.

It is SO worth it to take the class. (hey, they should make infomercials! I'd do a great testimonial :P)
