Our son is 5 and has grand mal seizures. We have heard that there are trained dogs that can detect and alert of the onset of a seizure. Is this true? If so, are they effective?

Yes, and from what I've seen, yes.

Dogs can sense trouble before humans can see it. Mine even go on alert if I am ill. I had the flu last week, and the worse it got, the more the dog sensed.

Seizure dogs will alert on the pre-seizure signs, and let you know to get ready. I don't know if anything could actually prevent a grand mal, but an early alert is definitely better than nothing.

Prayers for your boy and your family as you manage this condition!

I have seen a program on tv and read the story of a boy in the magazine that has a dog that senses befor the child would have a seizure, and i cant remember exactly how,but the dog starts to lick the boys face to keep him alert. All i know is that the dog has helped the family alot.
