Separation Anxiety at age 3

My daughter was in preschool since she was a baby and we had no issues. I was laid off and home with her for about 6 months and now have put her back in preschool, since I have found a new job. She just turned 3. Some days she is ok when I drop her off, but recently, there are more days that she cries and screams and gets hysterical when I try to walk out the door. She is always happy and playing when I pick her up, and I completely trust the daycare center, that they are taking good care of her, but it is absolutely heartbreaking to leave her like that. I wish I was able to stay home, but financially, it is just not possible. Has anybody else gone through this, and do you have any advice?

Hello,
I'm a nanny and child care provider and have seen this a thousand times.

A technique you can try is giving her something personal of yours...a special business card, picture of the family, special trinket...and let her keep it in her school bag. Explain to her (not at school, but at home during weekend down time) that this item is to help remind her that you are never too far away and she always has something to make her smile when you have to be away for the day. And in turn, ask her to give you something special. Tell her you have tears when she has to stay at school, but you will keep her item close to you and take it out to make you smile.

Make sure her teachers are involved too, so that when she has a "moment" they can comfort her and let her have some time to look at her trinket. I've dealt with this at the 5-year old level, so there is hope and it will pass! Good luck :)
