Should 3 year old watch dog being buried?

We have a dog who we will be putting to sleep on Friday and we already explained to her about him being put down. We will be burying him in our yard, should she watch him being buried or wait after he's buried?

As long as you explain, on her level, what is going on, she should be fine. Ours were 3 & 5 the first time we had to put down one of ours, and they both wanted to help dig, because they loved that dog. When my youngest was 5, we had to put down another, and he and his brother (8 by then) went to help dig that one too.

The only one they didn't help with was the most recent in 2010, because they were in school that day, and the eldest (15) was more upset about that one dying than the rest all put together.

You're going to have to explain why the dog is gone anyway, is what we figured, so the best way is to show that they're going to heaven (or however you believe) to be with whomever else in your family has passed. For the first one that we had to bury, my eldest asked if she was in heaven with Grandma, who had only recently passed away herself, and we took it from there
