This morning my son woke up and was playing and I fell asleep on the couch on accident. About 10-15 min. after I fell asleep I woke up frantic cause my son was not in the living room playing with his toys...I can not believe I fell asleep in the first place and this is not something I have ever done (he just learned how to crawl a couple days ago). Anyway, I found him in the bathroom...garbage emptied all around him (contained about 10 dirty diapers) and the plunger was out of the plastic bag I keep in next to the toilet AND the toilet bowl brush was out of the case it is in next to the toilet....I was immediately worried and gave him a bath and washed his face. I feel like such a bad mom for falling asleep in the first place AND not baby proofing our house yet. I am wondering...should I be extremely worried and take him to see a Dr. because he may have gotten pretty bad germs in his mouth?? Am I overreacting? Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? What would be signs to look for if he did get something in his mouth? Could he get pink eye??

If he's not sick there isn't much the doc can do. My kid is always getting into stuff, but you can't watch everything they do 24/7.

I haven't read any of the other replies but my first reaction is to say "Ohhhh poor baby!" And by that, I mean YOU Momma! Give yourself a break. We've all done the same exact thing before. I once fell asleep just like you and found my teething 8 month old GNAWING on the toilet brush. Trust me, he'll be ok. Just do your best to clean up the mess. Take a wet wash cloth and wipe out the inside of his mouth. At your son's age is about the time I learned that the toilet is one place in the house that needs to be kept clean at all times lol If it's clean and he gets into it then you worry less.

Don't stress yourself though. If he was sick, you'd know it because you're his mother and you're with him constantly. I'm sure he's fine so stop fretting, ok?

lol the other day my friend and I were going for a walk. In an effort to keep her son occupied she showed him a snail. Well, I didn't realize she'd handed him the snail to look at until a few minutes later when i looked at him and saw he had something in his mouth! apparently the snail felt pretty good on his gums cause he just rolled it around his mouth a bit and when we realized what he'd done she of course freaked! Stop in the middle of the road, try to find the snail only to realize when she freaked he spat it into his hand and tossed it away. Lol, we laughed so hard i nearly peed my pants on the way to the park. Kids get into things, I've got more of these stories but usually unless there's somthing physically or chemically dangerous in the things they get into it's not a big concern.

Hello everyone! My son is fine, no rashes, fever, change in behavior:) I am so relieved and want to thank everyone for the words of encouragement! lesson learned:) i have rearanged things in the house for "baby proffing" and now my husband and i make it a point to close the bathroom door always atleast until we can figure out a way to proof in there. when you are so exausted and busy you get a little scattered and i seriously do not remember even falling asleep...Cynthia, that is a funny story! thanks for sharing:)

Oh, baby gates are a gem also. I usually close the door to the bathroom. I keep the toilet bowl closed all the time, but I would fear her falling face first into the toilet and drowning before I would be concerned about what you described. She also likes to tear up toilet paper and put it in the toilet. Lovely. Oh and one last thought, we have ALL fallen asleep when we are not suppose to. It happens. Baby proofing your house will just set your mind at ease in case it happens again. Don't beat yourself up too much over this.

WOWZA! He had a little adventure all on his own huh?

First off, I agree with Sharlene. Look for symptoms, but right now...just be grossed out....not to concerned. My daughter has done what you are describing, but our plunger is not in the bathroom. She didn't get that, but was rubbing her tooth brush on the toilet scrubber. I was more worried about the harsh chemicals than anything. She turned out fine.

Secondly, congratulations to you and your son on the crawling! How exciting and scary all at once. Now you know, it is time to baby proof.

Babies get into a lot of things, even in an instant, so don't be too hard on yourself for falling asleep. It happens. Just look for signs of things being different with him and then take him to the doctor.

Oh, gross!

Crawling babies just get into a lot more than we could imagine while they're sitting so nicely on their blankets. I think you did fine. Wash him down and try not to freak out. (and get in the habit of closing the washroom door) But I don't think you should be worried, more than likely he's perfectly fine.

I remember when my son ate a fly. I nearly threw up!

As for the sleeping thing, well you're only human. Maybe you could move a few toys into your bedroom and babyproof the place for those times when he wakes up earlier than you would like. He can play on the floor while you talk to him from the bed, and if you nod off, no harm done.

your not a bad mom just over worked. motherhood is the only job where you are on call 24/7 365 days a year, so don't be too hard on your self. just do some baby proofing so you will be ready the next time sleep happens. i would not worry too much about the gems unless you see sings of a problem. i wanted to share my story with you. i fell asleep one time at my son's school play. i was recording and i just fell into a deep sleep. in the video you see me drop the cam in my lap it stays on the whole time. you can hear me snoring and you can hear everything. at the end of the play the clapping wakes me up and the cam hits the floor. my son runs out to me asking mom did you see me? did you like it? so i told him he did a wonderful job... my point is things happen and it don't mean you are a bad mom. i'm sure your baby is fine.

thank you so much for the advice Sharlene. I will keep close watch for any changes it's difficult cause he is teething and everyother day he loses his appetite anyway and gets sick acting but I will pay very close attention.
