Should I call CPS?

I know of a little girl who is five years old and is not potty trained. She comes to school everyday in a soaking wet pull-up, and has to be changed almost immediately upon arrival at school. It has become apparent that the parents of this child do not change her pull-up at home before she leaves. She came into school today with poop in her pull-up and smelled horrible. After the nurse had changed her she came and told us that the feces were very old, dried to her bottom and she couldn't scrap it off of her. Once again, no one changed her before she came to school. Also, she has gotten sent home twice due to the fact she has fleas in her hair. She was searched for fleas and found that it was not just one flea, but she has flea eggs in her hair as well. My question is should this case be reported to CPS or is it something that we should just stay out of? It breaks my heart to see this poor child go through this, when it really isn't her fault.

Yes, I know......I've removed quite a few already, but have to get kids off to school now, so the rest will have to wait.

If you are a teacher, you have an obligation to report this. If you are not a teacher, I am surprised a teacher hasn't reported this. Where I live, teachers are mandatory reporters. Why has this not already been reported?

I would. Neglect is still abuse. Who knows what else this child is battling at home. :( Breaks my heart!

You need to report this. This is extremely unhealthy for this child. She needs your help. As her teacher, you are required by law to report this to your school officials and the police. I'm surprised the nurse hasn't done it already.

Oh and Jodi, I thinks you missed one of Melissa's posts. She tore into another girl a little while ago.

As a nurse, you are by law obligated . You can do it without leaving your name.

In Kansas, teachers are mandated reporters as well as most school staff. I work with children and adults with special needs and often have to make those calls. It is hard but also a necessity to keep some kids safe and healthy. Best of luck to you. Remember they investigate the cases so they may offer some kind of family training and family preservation before removing the child.

I would not automatically assume that the flea issue is neglect (though in addition to the pull up issue it sounds likely).... as long as it was/is being treated. I've never had personal experience w/ fleas, but I imagine a flea infestation 'could' be similar to a lice one.... which I do have experience with. We had no clue my daughter had lice until she came to me one day and told me that she had picked a bug out of her hair the night before. I literally combed out at least 100 nits/lice that day. I have no clue where she got them or how long she had them and not a single other member of the family even had one nit or lice in their entire head... really odd considering how easily they spread and the fact that our family shares practically EVERYTHING!

The pull up issue though... that IS an obvious case of neglect and should be reported asap. I agree with Jodi... schools are mandated reporters, so why hasn't this already been reported?
