My Mother-in-Law bought this for my 20 month old daughter...

She bought it about a week before the Royal Wedding, and my husband convinced me to keep it in the box because, "It might be worth something someday" So it's just sitting in my daughter's closet. Every time I go into her closet I just want to rip the box open and let her play with it!! What would you do?? Should I just leave it where it is and hope she can make some money off of it someday, or should I let her play with it?? Opinions please!!

FYI : My Mother-in-Law bought it for 15GBP and we looked on eBay and it's already selling for between 30-50GBP...

Here's my opinion...
When I watch these old 'junk shows' where the men are digging and finding old treasures...they find a toy. They rant and rave...and talk all about how much they loved this toy when they were a child. THEN...they talk about how much more valuable the toy would be if they still had the box. Now..this guy could be holding up a rusty old red tin car with one wheel missing...and all he's ranting about is the BOX.
Rich people collect antique toys still in the box because they are reminded of their CHILDHOOD...when they PLAYED with said toy.
Personally....I would let the child have the toys. They were BOUGHT with the intent of the little girl playing with them. If someone is worried about their resale value...tell them you kept the box. Hell, KEEP the box. Keep the packing material and the box and toss it somewhere it won't be damaged. If you decide in later years to pack the toy back in the box...then she's had the best of both worlds.
She got to play with her toy...and when she's 30 she will have a gently used toy, still in it's box.

It's stuff like this that I buy 2 of. One to save and one to play with. I remember the beanie baby craze and my mom used to buy us kids the beanies we wanted, but then she would buy the limited edition ones for herself to save for the future. If we wanted the limited edition too she'd buy another one for us, but she always got one for her collection as well. Now she has a fairly nice little pile of stuffed bears that are worth quite a bit because she kept them in great condition...

MIL gave it to my daughter and said, "I don't know if you want to open it or just leave it..." So I don't think she has an opinion either way. I think part of her wants my daughter to play with it, and part of her wants us to keep it :P I don't know! It's just such a nice toy and she loves her Little People toys...I'm sure we'll just keep it in the box for now...*sigh*
