I know this doesn't have much to do with parenting but it does have to do with having some " Mommy Alone Time" sooo...how many of you or your teens liked READING(not just watching the show) The Vampire Diaries? I am curious if I should buy the books to start reading on my "mommy alone day" that is coming up. So is it a good read?

Love the books, hate the show. But, I also acknolwedge that the shows are primarily geared to teenage girls and I didn't think I would care for the show. But I will say that while I loved to read vampire books long before the Twilight series made the sub-genre more fashionable! I have read both teen and adult vamp books, since I teach middle school Lang. Arts, I wanted to be in tune with what the kids were reading and it was my former babysitter that INSISTED I had to read Twilight a few years back!

So, if you want to give The Vampire Diaries a read, go for it. Then for the adult version, read (or re-read) Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire and the rest of her Vampire Chronicle series. More teen books are the other L.J. Smith vamp series, also the House of Night series by PC & Kristen Cast, and Blue Blood by Melissa de la Cruz. Adult series were mantioned above, Anita Blake series. I finished the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward and I highly recommend the hot steamy erotic vamp series. Also read the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) series by Charlaine Harris. I am currently reading the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, also hot and steamy sexy vamps!

I also read non-vamp books too, in case you think I am some weird freak! My 6th-8th graders always give me books reccommendations too.

I personally did not like the first book and never went back to read any of the others, i found elana (Think I have spelt that wrong!) VERY annoying. However I like the show haha..
If you like vampire novels another teenage based series of vampire novels is the Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead (I think thats the author) one's. I really enjoyed them. Or for the bit raunchier and aimed at adults try the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter novels by Laurell K Hamilton.

Sheena, if you visit Amazon.com and look up some of the series mentioned, you'll see many mesage board communities. The vam sub-genre is listed under "paranormal romance" but so many of the book series stand alone, that they have their own message board communities. All of the adult recommendations I got directly from the Amazon communities and have not been disappointed. Good luck! Let us know what you decided to read!

Yea, I'm a real mystery series nut. I have been known to go for sci-fi on occasion, though. Larry Nivens, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett...all great reads.

Oh, yes I love Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series too! But, growing up in NJ where the series is set makes it so wonderful and realistic to read! They are technically a mystery series, but throw in a stereotypical Jersey Girl with some light sex scenes, and it's a good read.

I passed on it. Maybe some day when I'm bored and my regular authors are all in between releasing new books.

I have no idea what books those are. My favorite authors are Christopher Moore, Dean Koontz, Jim Butcher, Kathy Reichs, Mary Higgins Clark, and Janet Evanovich. I read grown-up books. :P

Don't know about this series, as I don't like vampire books, but, as a general rule, books rather than TV anytime!!!

I think you should. I read the book when I was younger and I loved them. I've seen some of the show but I only got annoyed at everything they had changed.
