Should other people spank your kids?

I'm 17 and I live with my mom, step dad, and little brother, and I have a 15 month old daughter. I noticed the other day that my daughter had a red mark on her leg, so I confronted my step dad about it because him and my mom watch my daughter while I work and go to school. He said that she spilled something and he hit her on the leg to discipline her. Me and my step dad haven't really gotten along since my daughter was born, but I don't want anyone hitting or leaving marks on my daughter, what should I do?

Sometimes it takes a village to raise a child. And in your case, being a teen mother, you're probably going to need the help of your parents for a while. Should he have hit her, NO, of course not. But I'm not sure that "a red mark" is considered abuse. It wasn't a bruise or broken bone. You should tell him that spanking or other physical punishment will not happen again or you will report him. And he should not be left alone with her if at all possible. When you turn 18, if you can work it out, maybe you should try to find somewhere else to live.

I would agree with Dove. Children will spill. Hitting a child for an accident is ridiculous. It is their home though, you probably wont be able to win that fight. Start looking for alternative places to live that will be more constructive to raising your child the way you think she she should be raised.

She's a baby... NO ONE should be spanking her... certainly not for something as minute as spilling something at 15 months old. That's what little people DO. I'd firmly let him know that he is not to hit my child and I would not be leaving my child in his care any longer.
