Should we abandon sugar altogether from our kids diet?

It depends what you mean by using the term "sugar". There are many things in food that convert to sugar when we eat them, and that may or may not be a bad thing. Our bodies need a certain amount of sugar for energy - even diabetics need sugar. However, it is quite possible to avoid highly processed sugars and carbohydrates. But really, your question is like asking how long is a piece of string.
