Sickness and not eating

Hello, I'm 6 weeks and 3 days pregnant with my first. Lately I just can't eat nothing sounds good to me and I'm constantly feeling sick. I'm quiet worried as some days I'll just have a banana or a slice of toast. Any tips?

THis is pretty normal in the first trimester. Your appetite should return as you near the second trimester--usually around 10 to 12 weeks. It is even normal to lose a few pounds during the first trimester, but if you are losing a lot of weight, you should call your doctor.

For now, try to eat small snacks throughout the day to keep a little something on your stomach at all times. For whatever reason, for many women during pregnancy, when the stomach is empty, the desire to eat goes away and nausea sets in. Bread and crackers are good for neutralizing the stomach acid and keeping nausea at bay. Fruits can make it worse for some, but if they work for you, that is great. Veggies are also a good choice for most women.

The most important thing is to stay hydrated. Make sure you are drinking lots of water. Another way to get nutrition if you cannot eat is to drink smoothies, fruit or veggie juice (make sure it is real juice and doesn't have a ton of extra sugar added), or protein shakes. Check with your doctor if you use a protein mix, most are safe, but some have some additional vitamin and herbal supplements, that can be harmful during pregnancy. I know that Kelloggs, Boost, and Ensure shakes are safe, but some of the powders that you mix into your own shake are iffy.
