My 8 yr old son just started on 27 mg Concerts - day 7 to be exact. Anybody out that that can offer advice re lunch box ideas and supplements advice to help alleviate the side effects? He is a little nauseous and no appetite at school.

Ledia, decreased appetite may happen regardless of the dose. Please don't assume the dose it too high if this happens initially. Of course, if it persists and your child is losing weight, then you need to reevaluate with he doctor if the dose is correct or to change medications.

If he is nauseous and his appetite is decreased, his does is too high or he is on the wrong medication.
The FIRST symptom they tell you to look for is decreased appetite, because it is a sign that the dose is too high.
If he truly needs the high dose, talk to your doctor about a shorter term medication. Concerta is a slow release Methylphenidate medication and lasts for 12 hours. There are Methylphenidate medications that only stay in the system for 4 to 6 hours (ritalin and it's generic form). He can take one in the morning, then his appetite will return when it wears off at lunch, and he can take another after he eats lunch. That one should wear off about dinner time, and he should be able to remain un-medicated until bedtime. (Concerta and other ADHD drugs in that family are stimulants and will keep him awake if taken too late). Concerta does not stay in the system like Adderall and other Amphetamine drugs. He will not acclimate to it over time the way he would acclimate to drugs in the Amphetamine family.

Within a few weeks he will likely acclimate to the medication. Keep him hydrated, lots of protein to keep blood sugar steady and alleviate the jitters.
