One thing she should know is that she is not the only child without a father around. You can say, "Sometimes Mommies or Daddies take care of their babies by themselves because the other parent can't" - you may or may not want to answer 'why', but if she insists on knowing, you can say that "some people don't know how to be parents, and it takes a little time to learn. When he learns, he will come around"
So if he never comes around, then he never learned how, but if he does, she knows he has learned and is ready to try.
Not sure, but give it a go.
