Sleep Issues

My family recently moved to Canada and as a result our kids - 8 and 5 now have to share a room. This has become very counter-productive to the usual bedtime routine. No matter what we have tried, they will stay in bed and talk until they fall asleep, some nights until 11pm. I have tried separating them, and it will only work for a few nights but they will then cry for each other. I don't know what to do. They get in bed by 8pm and the usual routine is for them to turn off their lights after a story (for the 5 yr old) by 8:30 but they are being defiant. I have tried taking away tv time but not even that is working. It's just that I can't sleep until they are asleep so this 11pm schedule is keeping me UP. Any suggestions?

Tell them however long they spend talking.... that's how much earlier they will have to go to bed the next night. Let them know that bedtime is being moved up by a half an hour, so that they can use that time to talk... after that they need to be quiet or will be going to bed extra, extra early.

You don't want to eliminate the talking and bonding time, but they really need to be getting their sleep. So they can talk and bond in bed all afternoon if need be... lol

Dove....I tried this.....it worked like a charm. My friend Toni had also suggested this so I know it's a good piece of advice. I told them to keep talking but tomorrow bed time would be half hour earlier and if they were still talking it would go back half hour. In 5 minutes both mouths were shut and I heard gentle snores!!!!!! I was able to finish my school work and relax a bit before bed.
