sleep problems and help needed

My 8.5 month old has been co-sleeping with me on and off since he was born (didn't think we would, but he was colicky and we both slept if we did co-sleep), he would normally start sleeping in his crib and then come to bed with me later in the night. He was sleeping in his crib for 4-5 hours and then all of sudden he stopped. We went from 2-3 weeks of great sleep and naps to one day a 2 hour nap in his crib to there is no way you are putting me in that. He screams as soon as I even try to put him in the crib. He can be fast asleep or just dozing off and he screams. I have left him a couple of times to see if he would cry it out so to speak but after 20 minutes I go in and get him. He screams so hard that I just can't let him cry it out, its heartbreaking. He falls alseep really well, nursing but we are working on that. He is also up every hour to 2 hours. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I could try? I should also mention that I try to encourage him to play in his crib during the day to make it a postive environment but that doesn't work either, he really hates the crib. I need a good night sleep and so does he. Please help. thanks.

My daughter was the same exact way when she was teething. Actually the first time she started waking so much we took her to the doctor because we thought it might be an ear infection because it only happened when we tried laying her down. After the first time we knew everytime she was getting a tooth because her sleep habits when from good to horrible. You can try giving tylenol 30 minutes to an hour before bed to see if that helps to get him to sleep. With my daughter the tylenol helped for the first 3-4 hours and then she went back to waking every hour.
