Sleeping Too Much?!?!

Hi my daughter is 12 years old and is sleeping an awful lot. I'm worried. I haven't booked a doctor's appointment as my doctors are rubbish. She hasn't yet started her periods but is also growing tall fast. I'm thinking it could be a mixture of a growth spurt and periods on there way? She's just so tired. Please advise if you can?

There could be a variety of reasons she is sleeping so much.... virus, growth spurt, hormones, depression, etc... If you are concerned about the amount of sleep she is getting (and I have no idea what you are talking about by a lot)... make her an appointment. They can do some blood tests to rule out several things as a first step.

A physical would be a good idea at this point. Honestly, it is the only way to determine if your daughter's problem is medical, or growth, or another issue.

Dear Stacey,

Three possibilities, option 1: she kissed a boy and got The Sleeping Beauty Bug that requires a round of anti-biotics and her to sleep longer and longer times until she sleeps it off and is cured.

option 2: She's staying up late on her computer in her bedroom or reading books, just try checking her at 2 am, and see if she's still up, then a gentle voice and reminder that it's past midnight and she should get some rest.

option 3: She might be pre-disposed towards sleep apnea, a blockage in the throat, which causes poor sleep cycles, requiring longer sleeping periods to feel 'rested' and may need to be put on a ventilator or other breathing assistance at night to get a full night's sleep. I would look at this particularly if she is by chance considered Obese for her age group, or if one or both her parents have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, and that includes loud snoring if you haven't been diagnosed.
