What can I do to help my 16 year old son, who has an above average IQ, get good grades?

Maybe he's bored in school and is not challenged. Many times very smart kids don't apply themselves because the work is too easy. They already know it, so they don't bother completing homework or class assignments. Maybe the teacher is not engaging him to keep his attention. It's hard, with large class sizes, for teachers to give individual attention to some kids who need it. Maybe he needs encouragement from his parents. Instead of coming down hard on him about the bad grades, maybe you should sit him down and explain that you know he's capable of so much more than what he's showing. Explain that he's not hurting you as much as he's hurting himself and his chances at a better future. Maybe ask what his goals are (what he wants to be when he grows up) and then explain what he needs to do to accomplish those goals (example: you want to be an Astronaut, you need math, science, college education, etc), and come up with a plan. Give him a different perspective and a reason to do things he may find tedious.
