Smoking around Children

I don't smoke...never have, never will. However, my husband & every single member of his family does. It's a giant pet peeve of mine since they smell, leave butts in my yard, never wash their hands after & don't seem to care if they smoke near my children. I even had to kick his brother out because he would leave butts on my furniture!! Anyway....we share a car & I've asked that Hubs not smoke in the car because of the three car seats. His job is less than 10 mins away so I feel it's reasonable to smoke before or after he's in the vehicle. He thinks I'm being ridiculous & smokes any way. Then today I found out that he smokes in the car WITH the kids in there!! I told him I wanted the car seats removed & he wasn't to go anywhere with them alone (he never smokes when I'm around) & he's mad about that. I've given up on getting any of them to quit, but how can I get them to stop smoking around my three small children. I have told them about the effects of smoking & how dangerous 2nd hand smoke is to children, but they feel that because they all grew up around it, it's fine. At this point I don't care if they get mad about it because asking them nicely to stop hasn't worked.

I do smoke, but my husband doesn't. I don't smoke in the house or in our vehicles because of him and the kids. Does it get aggravating sometimes? Oh yeah! But to me my kids are more important than a damn cigarette.

Just keep sticking to your guns. You have every right to be mad about them smoking around YOUR children and your husband needs to take into account your feelings on the subject.

Since it is not a law the there should be some literature on the affects of second hand smoke for children he could read or you could read to him. Also there is signs you could make or buy that say no smoking so that others are aware you do not allow it in the home. Make it a point to tell his family if they continue to smoke and leave their butts around then they will not be welcome iny your home anymore. Its not their home. AND he should be backing you!

Thanks Denikka, I have told him about that. It's not the law yet, but they are trying to make it one.

Depending on where you live, it may actually be illegal to smoke inside the vehicle with anyone under the age of 16 years. Check out your local laws. If he won't listen to you, maybe he'll listen to the law.
