Rose, I think it's not late if you have already stopped this. During pregnancy everything a mother does has some effect on the foetus. Avoid those habits if you have any for these 39 weeks and you will be the best mom ever. Till now it would be fine and hope you are doing well. Take care!!

Back in the day when it was OK to smoke while pregnant my mom smoked when she was pregnant with me. All 9 months. And I turned out just fine. Of course I don't recommend doing this b/c now we know that smoking can cause birth defects or health problems. But probably smoking for a month in the first trimester won't harm your baby as long as you don't smoke the rest of the pregnancy.

I smoked until I got a positive at 4 weeks pregnant. My daughter is fine. I quit cold turkey after the positive test/

My MIL smoked when she was pregnant with her first 2 and those babies were both born at a small birth weight, and were, and still are, asthmatics. She quit after that, had 4 more children and they are all perfectly healthy kids. Don't know if there is any correlation to the smoking there, but my best guess would be that it's not just coincidence! Good luck to you if you quit smoking, I can't imagine it's easy, but it's probably best for your baby :)

Oh for goodness sake, Annie, even as a smoker you shouldn't condone smoking in pregnancy. Your pregnancy is not any proof that cigarette smoking has adverse effects on a baby. If you can deny that, then you have your head in the sand. I would rather a mother say "I know it is bad for my baby, but I just couldn't give up I am way too addicted" than a mother who says "oh, it won't harm you baby - mine is just fine". Research upon research has shown that the risks to your child are high. Sure, a percentage of babies of smokers are perfectly ok. And the others? Not so much.

Having said that, research also shows that a mother who quits in the first trimester will generally have a child the same size and weight without the risks as that of a non-smoking mother. It is never too late to quit.
