I would like help in an answer as to what I can do to help my son. He was diagnosed with ADHD, he takes intuniv but is still really struggling in school. He has an IEP gets alot of help but I feel like something is just not connecting with him. Has anyone had their child diagnosed with something beyond ADHD that maybe I could see his doctor about and try to get further help? It makes me so sad and I feel like a failure.

Aside from the medicine, what behavioral and cognitive therapy is he receiving?

Sometimes it does take a few months for the effects of therapy to kick in. It will feel like you are reminding him to follow his regimen over and over and over and he just isn't getting it, but eventually these therapies will become habit.

There is also the possibility that he is on the wrong medicine. Because the cause of ADHD has not truly been discovered yet, there is reason to believe that the symptoms we refer to as ADHD can actually be caused by several different anomalies in the brain. Different meds treat different issues, and our bodies respond differently depending on our specific anomaly. Have you tried any other medications? It is best to try one medication for at least 3 months before switching to something else, so the process of finding the right med and the right dose can be very time consuming.....and frustrating....which is why the therapy is so very important.

Lots of kids are diagnosed with more than just ADHD. As much as a third have some type of learning disability as well. It wouldn't be unreasonable to have your son testing for LD.

Don't feel like a failure though. You clearly care for your son very much. The important thing is for you and your son to both get into a habit of identifying specific problems and working to solve them.
