Hello Everyone.

I have a 6 year old son and he is having a hard time when I leave him at school in the morning. He is in 1st grade and it is just getting bad everyday. He starts crying and kicking and does not want to stay. The teacher try to talk to him and it doesnt work. Even his kndergardem teacher came to talk to him but he just dont want to stay. I dont know if this is normal. My heart breaks every time i drop him off. Today i was called back to the school because no one could clam him down. Any help or advice will help..
thank you

If he can not come up w/ a reason why he doesn't want to go (so that you and the teacher can help him work through it)... he goes to school. Period. If he gets so upset that the school calls you to come to him... you go and calm him down and send him back to class. If you go and pick him up he will think all he has to do is freak the heck out and he gets to go home.... so he'll keep playing you.

Now, I'm not saying that he might not have a legitimate reason to not want to go that needs to be dealt with... He should be speaking w/ the school guidance counselor and possibly speaking to an outside therapist to help figure this out and work through it w/ him... but until he opens up about the problem you have to keep sending him and keeping him at school or the behavior is never going to stop.

In kindergarden he would cry but he will clam down. But this year its the grabbing and kicking and screaming. We spoke to him and he said he dont like school and doesnt want to go. When i picked him up he clam down and now he is laughing and playing. I spoke to him and he said that he doesnt want to go..

He did fine in kindergarten? What is different this year? Can he tell you why he does not want to go? Some tears are normal especially in the first few weeks but usually after mom and dad are gone the kids settle down. Does he have a friend in the class? if so, maybe he and his buddy could arrive at the same time and walk in together? When you were called back in, what happened? Did you bring him home, or did he quiet down?
