My first has just left home - across the country - when do the tears stop? And how do I move on? My son is 22, and we are pretty close. I just feel like my heart is broken. He moved out on good terms and just needs to spread his wings I know. But it hurts...been crying for 2 days...I feel like I am being selfish.

My daughter left the nest at 19... across the country. It was very hard at first, but you do get used to it! It WILL be OK. Now I can't wait for my last to leave the nest! Complete turnaround! Just take it one day at a time. Look at all the good things that can happen now that he's out on his own, how good it will be for him to be independent. And start counting your blessings! When I'm down about ANYTHING, thats how I pull myself up by the bootstraps.... think of all the things I have to be grateful for! Good luck - I know how tough a time it is.

Maryann, does it get easier? My son 20 just told me he is moving out and I cannot stop crying!

Find a hobby. Join a group, take up something new (quilting, golf, knitting, crafts, etc). Go to a class. Take a university course just to learn about new things! Concentrate on other things that make you happy and realize that you raised a confident, independent boy - a job well done. And have lots of phone calls!

Look at it as a travel opportunity! Somewhere new you now have the perfect excuse to go visit :-) Find a hobby or reconnect with an old friend to help fill your time.

But you have phone calls, email, Skype, and visits that you can look forward to. My son died March 18th of leukemia, three weeks after turning 36. I don't want to be a jealous or envious person, but I will tell you that you need to be grateful that he is still walking Planet Earth.

First, let me ask how old is your son? That will influence most people's answers.
