Hi. My son struggles with sleep and to get to sleep he plays with my hair. He is now 2 yrs old and has done this since he was a baby. Sometimes he can pull it pretty hard and even tries to put his toes in my hair. I am assumling this is his way of coping - does anyone else have this and did their child grow out of it.

Thanks :)

thank you Renee - i have thought so many times about buying fake hair - i think i am goign to give it a try. He has not been able to bond with anything else and he can get aggressive when pulling my hair - thanks :)

I have twin B/G and my son has done this since he was born. He likes to wrap my hair around his fingers and suck his thumb. Yes, I would say this is more of a soothing mechanism than a problem. When he was around 1 years old it got pretty bad though, when the times I was not around (during naps and bedtime) he started to pull his own hair out to suck his thumb. He started to get a bald spot and I was getting desperate. How do you explain to a 1 year old that you can’t pull your hair out! So since he likes hair instead of having a soothing blanket, I thought I would give him his own hair. I bought some fake hair (my color and texture) and made small pony tails out of it. As funny as it seems, it worked like a charm. I give it to him when he naps and at bedtime. I figured I would rather wing him from the hair later than him having a bald spot in all of his early year pictures :)

PS...My son is 33 months now and he still has his hair at naps and night time.

One of my twins does it too. She is 8 month old but she plays with her hair (mine only when I hold her to sleep)

What I do is to put mittens on her so she doesn't hurt herself and give her a soft blanket or something to hold onto until she fall asleep.

Hope this helps
