Soon-to-be 1 year old fighting sleep? Any tips on making him go

My baby is turning 1 on April 25 and I've had no problems getting him down and out to bed. But, in the last few weeks, he has been fighting sleep. We have a nice bedtime routine down. I get dressed him in 'jim-jams' and the light goes out to make a dim room and he nurses while I rock him.

Well, lately, even when I know he's sleepy after nursing, he refuses to sleep. He'll be asleep in my arms as I rock him but when I put him down in his crib and I don't move fast enough. He'll pop his little blue eyes open and squeal really big. Then he'll pull himself up and stand up to play with his wipey box or his giant duck, if that's a good day. Usually, it's fuss his head off until he's tired. Which isn't crying. I've never let him cry it out, it's more grumbles and groans and fits if he doesn't get his way.

I have left him in his crib before to fuss himself to sleep. Is there any other tips/advice out there? It just seems like I'm having a battle every time.

He wakes up every day between 8:30 and 9 am. He's usually up until 10 or 10:30 then goes down for a nap.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, when I'm home from class, he'll sleep until 1pm (at the earliest) and 3pm (at the latest). With no evening nap and will go to bed directly at 8 or 8:30 at night, then want a snack at 11pm. Then he'll sleep until about 3am or 5am wanting a snack. Then wakes up at the time stated above.

On Tuesdays and Thursday, when his grandma/my mother is watching him. He'll sleep until 12:15, when I get home from class. Then he'll want to nap at 3:30 and sleep. I've never let him sleep too late with late naps like this. I usually wake him up at 5:30 or 6. Then he doesn't go to bed until 9:30 or 10 at night and will wake up every three hours.

Well, it takes time to adjust to a new schedule. Can you tell us his regular routine naps included and for how long? Maybe we could help more if we had all the information.

I've working on eliminating his evening nap, so he goes to bed about 7:30 or 8. Then he's up every four to five hours a night.

I would take a look at his naps during the day and see if one needs to be eliminated, or shorten them.
