I also had varicose vains on my unmentionables ;) it was terrble, the bands help that also...and I got the stirrup straps between the legs. It helped wonders...I also had one on the back of my leg which it helped that immensely. It really is worth the money when it is so painful..

Belly bands worked wonders for me. I started having pain 3 months in, and was diagnosed with it at 30 weeks. I don't know why you would not want to buy one...I know that it costs, and times are tight...but SPD is so fucking painful, it is worth the relief. I put mine on and noticed it helped immediately.

Other suggestions, keep legs closed at knees, no straddling...or sitting with legs apart. Rolling over in bed, try to do it with your knees together. I used a hot water bottle, it helped.

Do not deliver on your back, I am sure you won't with a home birth...but apparently it can make your SPD much worse and cause many problems afterwards. On your side, or other positions the midwife says.
