I am a parent of 2 special needs young men...The systems here in NY suck....This state likes to warehouse special needs, they don't promote keeping them in their home with their parents...For example, if a person has am IEP diploma, military service is completely out, and going to college is almost impossible. And if you have a young adult with learning disabilities, its hard to keep them at home. Sub con is
closing no funding. State of Pennsylvania has the Futures Program. Independent living is a joke, they would like to remove them out of homes and warehouse them, this creatives jobs. For example, I have 2 with special needs, warehousing them would create 6 to 8 new jobs. The state of California promotes keeping special needs in the home, by giving a living wage for one parent to stay home to take for the person of special needs.. I was born and raised in NY, but I am now moving out of state

Any work programs for special needs adults, in the state NY, are funded by each county, not by the state...As a result, the county I live in is not funding any job programs for special needs adults. They would like all parents to put them into rehab homes or warehouses. These homes are the largest employer in our area.

Honestly, I have an adult Aspberger's kid, and we've not had any problems.

I think some of it may be how much effort the parents are willing to put in.

Hopefully this OP finds something to fit her needs in California.
