My daughter just turned two in march and her vocabulary is just beginning to explode. We had birth to three do an evaluation on her at 18 months and they rated her really high for verbal skills even though she wasn't speaking because she understands everything. We'll probably do another evaluation in a month or so because even though she saying so much more outsiders don't necessarily understand what she's saying.
We taught our daughter sign language for everyday things. Also when you say the word that you want him to repeat try and get him to look at your lips. Try to get him to repeat the word, it he makes an effort that's great and then just repeat it once more for reinforcement. You can also have an evaluation done on him, if you do it before his two year appointment you can discuss your options with your doctor.
