Hi ladies. I wanted to find out if any other moms of little boys have experienced them "losing" words and not putting words together by 2 years old. My son has never had a huge vocabulary, but lately I've noticed that he is no longer saying things he was saying 4-5 months ago. He has never put two word phrases together. I'm growing more and more concerned. He seems to be developing normally in other ways. And in terms of autism, he doesn't show any other signs. But I am really bothered by his language skills and this regression. We haven't had any major changes in our lives. And he attends and moms day out twice a week, so he is around other children on a semi regular basis. Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying not to worry! But when he often uses the same non distinct sound and simply points to express himself, it's hard not to.

I had a son with a speech delay. Start out with an evaluation by your states Early Intervention Program. You call and request an eval, they will check his hearing speech, cognitive ability, physical ability, and do a full health history assessment as well. Then they compile all of the info and determine if he warrants intervention. If he does they will help you set it up and it is either free or very low cost treatment. IMO that is the way to start. Rather than wait and see, I am glad I had my son evaluated. Everyone told me, don't worry, he's a boy, he's your third, he will catch up....well he did catch up but I think that year of speech therapy helped him close the gap much more quickly. I learned a lot too. Like how to get him to say certain words, or to speak rather than point and grunt. As scary as it is, to be armed with information is better than to wing it and wait. If you post your state I can help you find the resources. If you want to do it on your own; google IDEA under 3 for (whatever state you live in). Or, you can call you local public school as well, they would have the numbers to call.

I would have his hearing checked and have a speech evaluation done. You local school can connect you with AEA, which will do both for free. You can also connect with his doctor and he can also help refer you.
