Spina Bifida?

My doc just called and informed me that I have a 1 in 16 risk of my baby having spina bifida from the blood draw they just took. They said they can get a better reading about 99% by doing amniocentesis but there is a small chance of miscarriage. My husband says do the test but im scared. And lets say I do the test and it also comes out positive. then what. I dont believe in taking one of Gods creations, but i would probably be a horrible care taker even though I would still love this child with all my heart. I dont know what to do. I have been wallowing for the past hour which is not helping anything but a headache. Any experience with this or comments are welcome. thanks.

I didn't bother having any of these tests simply because my Dr explained to me a few things. He asked if I would abort if I found out my baby had Downs Syndrome or Spina Bifida or another birth defect. I answered no, and so he said then I don't suggest you have the tests as they can come back positive incorrectly and the most important thing for a healthy baby, even if they have a defect, is that the mother is happy and healthy throughout her pregnancy. He told me that even if I was having a baby with a birth defect, that the baby would have a better chance of being a well baby if I enjoy my pregnancy and stay positive. Spina Bifida is one of many more common defects that can be totally managed, and the child can grow to be an independent adult. If your child had asthma would you be a terrible care giver? I'd imagine not! So if your child had another illness/defect that needed close management you would just be a normal mother, looking after your child, caring for them, giving them opportunities to experience life, just like a child who had no illness at all. You will be a mummy, and this will be your baby, and you will love your baby and look after her/him just the same. I would stop the wallowing and resolve to get up and get on with it. Its 1 in 16...a small chance. If you really feel you need to be informed just incase, start contacting support groups, researching the illness etc so you can be informed and have the support systems in place just incase...

I know someone with spina bifida and she looks completely normal. She does have a lot of pain but it's being controlled. I hate how doctors scare you like that! I would not do the amnio, the risk is too high.
One in 16 isn't that bad IMO. And if you do some research you'll find people CAN live a semi-normal life with it.
