My fiancee and I have been together 3 years. He has a 3 and a half year old, I have a 7 year old and we have a 4 month old tegether. I've been feeling very distraught lately with my fiancee because the weeks that we have his 3 year old he treats him like he has done no wrong. If he's naughty he will put him in time out than act like it never happened 5 minutes later but my son, if he's naughty he gets punished for days and weeks at a time and my fiancee doesn't let it go. He says it's because my son is older and should know better but come on now how do you think my son feels when he sees his step brother getting off punishment easy. It just doesn't sit well with me. I don't know what to do anymore because I've tried talking to my fiancee about it but it does no good. He is a good parent to him just not when his son is around. Anyone have any advise?

Also you and your fiance need to rethink the rules of the house and make them all fit for both kids. You need to sit down and discuss your patterns of discipline before you actually get married and really blend the family. If you are not on the same page then he is going to continue to treat your son this way until you get so tired of it you decide the relationship is over. I really think you should have discussed this before ever moving in together and your are not step anything until you get married.

I'd flat out tell him to treat them both equally or to stop punishing my kid... At least until you two get into some couples counseling. He is being completely unfair to punish a 7 year old for weeks at a time. Heck, I don't even punish my teenagers that long.

For the record... there is nothing wrong w/ sticking a 3 year old in time out and then dropping the issue when the punishment is over. That's GOOD. It's completely unfair to hold a child's mistakes against them for a long time afterwards.
