stripping membranes

I am due today (for what that is worth as we ladies know not much lol) and went to my OB yesterday. My OB is out this week but the resident who saw me stripped my membranes. She said I was 2 cm dilated and 80% effaced which is an improvement from the 1 and 50 I have been holding at for the last 3 weeks. She did it in the hopes it MIGHT encourage me to go into labor on my own while she scheduled me for the induction procedure for next week as my doctor instructed. I have spotted a little blood since about 5 hours after she stripped me but she warned me that would be normal. No contractions yet :( Anyone have experience for better or worse with this procedure. This is my first baby so I am curious. Please include if it was your first baby and how dilated/effaced you were if you can recall.

I had my membranes stripped several times as I went almost 3 weeks overdue with my first girl and my doc wanted to try to start labor without inducing me.

I was 3 cm dilated 50% effaced for the better part of 6 weeks before I had her - I still wound up being induced because I did not go into labor on my own.

With my 2nd girl I had a spontaneous rupture of the membrane and had her 6 hours after that. I was 2 weeks 3 days overdue with her, but at least I went into labor on my own :)

I had it done 4 times! Obviously the success rate is not high! The first time was at 38 weeks, then 39, 40, and at 41 weeks, right before I was induced. It hurt like hell and I lost my mucus plug and bled the first time. My doctor thought it was going to be really successful because I started contracting really hard as soon as he did it, but no luck! I figure it's worth a try, but I sure wouldn't count on it.

It worked with my mother's last child. We have extremely late babies and she was excited about going into labor with that one at only 9 days past her due date. If your body isn't ready though, it won't work anyway. She was always pessuring me to have my midwife do it but I declined each time so I don't have any firsthand info for you.

I had my membranes stripped with my first child at 38 weeks, I was 4 and 90%....I had spotting, mild cramping, and mild contractions, but it didn't work. I was induced a week later at 5 and 100%

I has my membranes stripped with my first one when I was 1 week past due...I went into labor about 9 hours later so I would say mine was a success, I did have cramping and some spotting. My contractions did not start until about 9 hours after.

Alot of women are misguided about this topic. Stripping of the membranes is by no means a guarantee. It is actually by chance that you will go into labor after the procedure. My membranes were stripped with my second pregnancy because I was sooo uncomfortable. I figured what the heck..if it works, it works. Well it didn't. I went 5 days over my due date. So hang in there. You should lose your mucus plug soon if you haven't already. The baby will come when it's ready! Congratulations.
