Need advice on how to effectively guide my 4 year old son, who is very strong willed and stubborn. I am a single parent, almost 40, and believe that children should have manners. My son is very smart/bright.

Well, I think most parents can relate to having a strong-willed child. And figuring out how to handle their behavior is no picnic :). But I think consistency can be key here. Also, communicating with them before hand what the consequences for their behavior will be and then enforcing it. So, things like behavior charts might help in this area. It also helps avoid arguments about what sort of punishment they'll get. Lastly, don't forget to reward positive behavior as well. For instance, they get to put a marble in a jar every time they respond correctly and when they reach a certain number have a special outing or prize? For some other tips, maybe check out some books on this topic. Cynthia Tobias' You Can't Make Me But I Can be Persuaded might be a good one...

Anything you can turn into a game to get him to cooperate... or make it seem like his idea.. will help lessen the battles.
