My child now has to attend summer school from 8:30am to 12:30pm. due to a bad ELA grade. Does anyone have any insight as to how my daughter can enjoy her summer with having to attend summer school? Are there camps that start at 1pm - 5pm??? I am so distraught! Help!

Check with the City of San Jose. I know there is a free camp on Ocala and Capitol but I think it ends at 3pm. The great thing is, its free. Let me know if you want the information for that camp.

But the City does a have a few camps that run to 5pm or later at a variety of community centers.

Good luck

My daughter did not do well on her Ela's. The teacher called us specifically when the grades came out - she said tomorrow we will retest her to see how she does. If she does well. she will not have to attend summer school and will be promoted to the next grade. Got a call after the test from an excited teacher say she passed the test with flying colors. We were so excited!!!! Today I get a call from the principals office saying she has to go to summer school and take the test again at the end of the summer. I've paid for camp etc already and I have to now tell her all that we said to her about how great she was not having to go is now for naught. I know how to talk to her and encourage her about summer school...but I hate that she won't be able to enjoy the summer of swimming - what she looks foward all year for. I do not know what she will do after 12:30pm each day. I think summer classes is an asset for children. She was going to be enrolled in Kumon throughout but now all has to change...Ugh!

My son always enjoyed both summer school and after. If you don't make her summer school all about being "punished" for having a bad grade, and you turn it into an experience that she looks forward to and has fun with, she'll be in a better boat academically. There is absolutely no reason on earth that she should NOT enjoy her summer "with having to attend summer school".

Actually, my son has asked to go to summer school every year since he found out there was one, and loved it every year.

So, my next question is: How old is your daughter? And what area are you in?
