Supplementing breastfeeding with formula

My son was 2 weeks old yesterday and I have been exclusively bf him. He weighed 7.9 lbs at birth. I just took him to the drs for a 2-week check and now he weighs 7.5 lbs. He gained 1 oz from last week. The dr told me to start supplementing with formula after bf for 15 min on one side and offering the other side. I tried to do this and my son refuses the formula. If anyone was in this position and has some advice - it would be so appreciated. I love bf my son but now I am so concerned about his weight. I am even trying breast massage while he is feeding to ensure he is is taking in more of my milk. I noticed a difference - he was more satisfied after the feeding than he had been. Maybe I answered my own question. I just don't want my son to lose any more weight.

I agree with Dove. Its normal for babies to lose a little bit of their birth weight in the first couple of weeks, and then regain it. It's hard to tell how much a breastfed is getting, but the general thought is that they will nurse until they are full. Keep it up - don't give up yet.

Personally I'd give it more time before thinking about supplementing. Make sure you are keeping hydrated and offering the breast as often as baby wants it (and not less often than every 2 hours). Don't time your baby on the breast, but make sure he drinks as long as he wants on one side and then still offer the other. 'Typically' a baby will regain their birth weight after about two weeks, but not always... and that is ok. Is he wetting at least 6-8 times/day?

'I' would do what you are doing and what I mentioned and see what happens in the next week or two. Your baby 'might' need to be supplemented, but if he IS growing (1 oz is still something) and wetting enough... I'd put it off for the time being.

Thanks Dove. Yes, he is wetting at least 6 diapers a day. I am going to continue what I'm doing to see if that helps. I'm going to take him to get weighed on Monday and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for your input.
