Can you supplement before breast feeding instead of after?

Probably not a great idea if you are planning on continuing breastfeeding because it will cause your milk supply to reduce. In order to keep up with the demand of your baby as it gets older, you need to be allowing your baby to drink your breasts dry, as this will increase supply. Supplementing on an ongoing basis will generally lead to supply problems.

You can, but it generally leads to weaning. They say to nurse first so baby gets as much breastmilk as possible and only tops off with formula. Also a hungry baby will nurse better and that will encourage more milk production so formula first can lead to (or exacerbate) supply problems.
