Hi can anyone tell me how to break swaddling. My baby won't sleep without being swaddled. Now at 4 1/2 months I would really like to stop. If I put her down not wrapped her arms will fly around and keep her awake. I'm lucky to get 15 minutes out of her when unwrapped. I'm hoping this is something she will grow out of. I don't wrap her legs just her arms. She is rolling too which is also why i would like to stop it.Any ideas?

maybe she just likes the comfort of blanket around her snugly.......try just swaddling her body just under her arms....that will give her the security she sounds like she needs but still allow her arms free .........hope that helps

If she can't roll over while swaddled, I don't see why you can't keep on swaddling her for a while longer. My son could roll from his back to his tummy while in the swaddler which was dangerous because he couldn't roll back over and his arms weren't free to help him lift himself off the mattress. That's really why we were forced to stop when we did. But if that isn't the case, I would give it another few weeks and see what happens. The startle reflex should fade soon and she might do better once it's gone. Maybe try just wrapping one arm and see how she does with it?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm really dreading it. I have put her down a couple of times in the cot unwrapped and I sit and watch her and she still startles a lot . I don't know if she will stop it once I continue to keep her unwrapped or this means she still needs wrapping. The other problem being when she isn't wrapped she will roll on to her tummy and then squeal as she won't roll back. So this also keeps her awake.

We had the exact same problem with our son. He LOVED being swaddled and it was the only way he would sleep. Like your daughter, we had to stop when he started rolling in his crib; it just isn't safe at that point. We went cold turkey and he would wake up crying every 15-30 minutes all night long. It took him about a week to get used to sleeping without the swaddle (during which we were all miserable). After that week, he did great and actually started sleeping better than before - he discovered the joy of sleeping on his belly and seemed to be more comfortable. And that was when he started sleeping through the night for us. Sorry I don't have any tricks for you. Just try and make it through until baby gets used to it. Good luck!
