What do you do when you hear your pre-schooler say the F word? I was totally surprised and I heard it and I gave him time out which means no games or TV. Any suggestions?

Well, where did he learn it from? Kids this age are generally learning from someone who modelled the behaviour. Also, I'm not sure about a huge punishment the first time - perhaps he didn't even realise it wasn't a word he could use. Explain to him that this is a bad word and if he uses it, he will get punished. Then it is clear to him. Right now, he probably doesn't understand what he said was wrong.

I was trying to figure it out. Teacher said he maybe gets it from the other kid. Not sure of that. I'm sure not from us. In terms of TV , he's only watching Sesame Street but sometimes he turned the tv by himself and I'm afraid that he gets it from there.
Just a bit sad of this but hoping that he won't say that when he goes to the big school which will be soon, this Sept.

Trying to understand of being a kid but a bit scary as well. Thanks for the comments

Thanks Jodi
The teacher told me that he heard him say that. He was playing with other kid at school and that kid say that as well. The teacher caught my son and she gave him time out. Teacher told me and they talked to me about it.
I spoke to my son and told him not to say that word again because it's bad and he said yes.
Surprisingly last night when we went to bed he said it again. I was mad and I told him because u said again I will punish u of not watching tv or playing electronic games. He apologize to me and cried because he said I hurt his feeling. I explained why he is in time out.
