hi, are there any other swim moms out there?! I have a 12 yr old daughter who is just back swimming after a 4 month break due to developing a very rare condition: she has an allergy to exercise! Exercise Induced Anaphylaxis (EIA). Luckily we have a Dr based here who was able to treat her and she has responded well. She gets injections of Xolair. She loves swimming and has lots of talent and missed it so badly when she was off. We don't know how long the treatment will last or whether the condition will come back so it is all very tenuous but for the moment she wants to swim so we are supporting her as best we can. She also has her period since she was 10, it lasts a week and is very heavy. A lot for her to deal with isn't it? She is up at 4.45am 4 days a week. My problem is that she is so grumpy at times and I think she needs more sleep. I find it hard not to get upset by her moods. She has to carry epi pens etc. I am so afraid that this is all too much for her although the Dr has assured me it's not. She has been back almost 6 weeks now and is up to full training again already which has surpassed our and the coach's expectations. At one point we thought she might never be able to go back. She is so determined and such a great kid. As I write I know I have to be the adult and not let her moods get to me. She has been through so much and has been so brave, I guess she's allowed be grumpy sometimes. I just need to manage my own anxiety and not let it get to me when she's being obnoxious! Love to hear from other swim moms as it's a tough job!
