Swollen / ballooning penis in intact infant boy

While changing my 5 month old son's diaper he started to pee and his penis had ballooned to 2 or 3 its normal size!

I've read about ballooning being normal in uncircumcised boys, but instead of just being swollen at the foreskin, it was the whole penis.

Is this normal? Especially at his age?

Just wanted to add an update that the urologist gave a diagnosis of phimosis (basically tight foreskin), which means urine has too narrow a pathway and therefore pools up under the skin. Often just the head fills up, but in some cases the whole penis will. The ballooning goes down once the majority of the pee makes it way out.

I wanted to post this since the condition seems to be less know in America since circumcision is so popular. But phimosis is not uncommon in uncircumcised boys. Many outgrow it naturally, but there are procedures which can be done if necessary.

If you son has this, do get him checked out since the condition requires daily maintenance / attention.

Yeah, because that sounds really weird...and as a mom of two boys, one with some very strange medical stuff...I'd get it checked out

Shawnn, thanks for your comment!

It was not an erection, though he has had those, too. It definately seemed like it filled with pee...no other strange symptoms were seen (no puss or redess, etc)

I left a message with the doctor to see if I should come in.

Thanks! Good point about checking for a hair or something! But there was nothing and the color, etc otherwise looks good.

It went back to normal only a few moments after he finished peeing.

Was it swelling, or was it an erection?

Erections are normal, even at 5 months. If it is swollen, then I'd see a physician.

If it was just an erection that is totally normal. Anything else, I would bring him to the doctor asap to make sure he does not lose circulation. Check his penis and make sure there is nothing wrapped around it like a hair. I have never heard of this happening. This does not sound normal.
