My lil guy is about 12 wks, corrected age 6 wks. I am just curious... when can the parent of a preemie start to relax about being "anal" about taking their baby out in crowded places. Also, I am now at the point where I am feeling awkward asking people to wash their hands before they hold him, because people don't see him as brand new anymore.

A preemie has a very weak ammune system to begin with and many have lung problems. Definately NO!.. Do Not expose the little one to all of the germs and I don't care if they wash their hands or not; they still breathe, A preemie's first year is very tenious, don't take chances, take precautions. It may cramp your style, the baby's welfare should come first. I had a preemie and it was 81/2 months before she was around any strangers. A ounce of prevention is worth a pound cure.

You never have to feel awkward about asking people to wash their hands before holding your baby. You are the parent and you get to do what you feel most comfortable with. I would ask people to do that with a full term baby, let alone a preemie. As far as crowded places, such as shopping, etc. I think it would be okay to do that at this point, but I would keep him in his carrier and not let strangers get too close.

I don't think you're being "anal". That's YOUR baby! My youngest was 'borderline preemie' and my husband had everyone literally disinfect themselves before getting too close to the baby!! I went through so many bottles of hand sanitizers in a month, it was kind of embarrassing. lol Now THAT'S anal hahaha
