The best thing you can do for your child right now is to help him build his fine motor skills. Until they are well developed, a child cannot learn to write well.
As Michelle mentioned, they need to learn to hold and use a pencil. Start with crayons. But other things that can help include playing with playdougg, building blocks (lego or other), colouring in, painting, threading things onto string (pasta shells?), anything that involves using the fine muscles in the fingers.
You will know when he is ready to start writing. He will be able to draw pictures with a pencil that have a little detail that you can recognise. He will have control over the activities I have mentioned. This is a sign that his fine motor skills are sufficiently developed to be ready to write.
